Unsafe and Aggressive Driving
Unsafe behaviors, not classified as speeding, make up a sizable proportion of vehicular crashes. Drivers reported doing unsafe and aggressive driving behaviors "at least sometimes." These behaviors include but are not limited to:
- Entering an intersection just as the light turned from yellow to red (40 % of driver polled)
- Rolling stops at stop signs (30% of driver polled)
- Making angry, insulting, or obscene gestures towards another driver (12% of driver polled)
- Cutting in front of other drivers (10% of driver polled)
Drivers age 21 and younger are much more likely than older drivers to engage in these behaviors, with 29% saying they cut in front of other drivers, 24% making obscene or angry gestures towards other motorists, and 17% using the shoulder to pass in heavy traffic.
Changes in Aggressive Driving in Others
Drivers polled believe that others drivers are more aggressive now than they were one year ago. More specifically, compared to a year ago, 40% of drivers feel that other drivers are driving more aggressively; while 52% of drivers feel other drivers are driving as aggressively as previously. Only 6% feel other drivers are driving less aggressively.
Threat of Different Driving Behaviors
While speeding was the biggest unsafe driving behavior, drivers polled were asked about other unsafe driving behaviors with regard to their personal safety.
- Virtually all drivers (97%) felt that when other drivers run red lights it is a major threat to themselves and their family
- 83% felt that traffic weaving is a major threat
- 58% saw rolling stops at stop signs as a major threat
Police Enforcement
Not including speeding, polled drivers believed that enforcement was too lax with the other unsafe driving behaviors. With 60% of drivers polled believing that there is too little enforcement for tailgating and 57% believing there is lax enforcement for weaving.
Younger drivers are most likely to believe there is too much enforcement for most of the unsafe driving behaviors, especially speeding. 22% of those under age 30 reported that they believe there is too much police enforcement of speeding, as compared to 8% of those age 30 or older.
